Finding Motivation and Overcoming Fitness Plateaus in Your 40s

Let’s be honest, entering your 40s can be a bit scary, although it’s actually an exciting phase of life. An exciting phase that can also bring unique challenges to your fitness journey. Our bodies are undergoing constant changes we may not be expecting, whaich makes it common to encounter fitness plateaus and a dip in motivation. By keeping the right mindset and following executable strategies, you can reignite your passion for fitness and push past these hurdles. Today, let’s discuss effective ways to find motivation and overcome fitness plateaus in your 40s.

Set and Track Your Goals

As annoying as it may be, we have to track our progress. Always start by setting clear and achievable goals. This is crucial to stay motivated. Define what your specific objective is, such as improving strength, increasing endurance, or shedding a few pounds. Set long term goals, break down your goals into smaller milestones and track your progress along the way. For example, I had a goal of dunking a basketball again by the end of the year a few years ago. I unfortunately wasn;t even close. I knew had to lose some weight, get stronger throughout my entire body, with a big focus on my core, as well as increase my endurance and flexibility. Throughout the year, I followed a series of 6 to 8 week programs with different focuses. I did an 8 week fat loss program, a 6 week strength program and also a bodyweight program, along with increasing my cardio. I still couldn’t dunk by the end of the year, but I sure looked good grabbing the rim.

Along with setting that goal, it is important to track everything. Don’t just rely on the scale, but be sure to track your weight to make sure you aren’t losing or gaining weight too fast. Take pictures to see the changes. I have had times where I was losing body fat and gaining muscle, but the scale was not moving. The progress pictures I had helped me stay motivated by allowing me to see the changes. Tracking everything you eat is also very important. We don’t always realize the extra calories we put in our bodies, but if we track everything, we can see where to make the changes needed.  Whether it’s through a fitness journal, mobile app, or wearable device, monitoring your achievements will provide a sense of accomplishment and motivate you to keep pushing forward.

Change things up to break through

Breaking through plateaus requires introducing variety into your workout routine and your nutrition plan. Experiment with different exercise modalities, such as strength training, cardiovascular activities, yoga, or sports. Cross-training not only challenges your body in new ways but also prevents boredom and keeps your workouts fresh. I like to occasionally do group fitness programs when I get bored. I’ve tried things like crossfit and boxing classes to reignite my interest. Explore group fitness classes, outdoor activities, or online workout programs to inject excitement and break through plateaus.

Prioritize Recovery and Rest

Get your rest, no matter how good you feel, get your rest. Giving our bodies ample time to rest and repair becomes increasingly important as we age. Incorporating regular rest days into your schedule, and actually use them. Also, try to get quality sleep. I have a newborn, so my current definition of quality sleep isn’t normal, but I know I need to get it in. Proper nutrition and adequate hydration are vital to  support optimal recovery. Consider incorporating activities like yoga, stretching, or foam rolling to enhance flexibility and prevent injuries. By prioritizing recovery, you’ll ensure that your body is ready to perform at its best and overcome plateaus more effectively.

Mindset over Everything

Hitting plateaus are a natural part of fitness, and it’s crucial to embrace them as opportunities for growth. Shift your mindset from focusing solely on outcomes to enjoying the process. I love hitting plateaus because it forces me to adapt to break through them. Celebrate small victories, acknowledge your efforts, and be patient with yourself. Remember that fitness is a lifelong journey, and progress comes in various forms. Cultivating a positive mindset will help you stay motivated, overcome plateaus, and continue striving for a healthier and more fulfilling life.

As you navigate your fitness journey in your 40s, it’s normal to encounter plateaus and waning motivation. However, with the right strategies, you can reignite your passion and push through these challenges. Embrace goal setting, introduce variety, prioritize recovery, seek support, and adjust your mindset. Remember, the key to success lies in consistency, resilience, and a commitment to lifelong wellness.
